Biography
Loic “The Shire” Billaut has been UCLA Smaug’s most electric player since he stepped foot in Westwood. Hailing from San Jose, Loic began his ultimate career by competing at YCC at 13 years old. He went on to captain Oakland’s smOAK at YCC before his selection for the 2022 U20 Men’s National team. Loic then took his talents to SoCal and has been transformative on and off the field.
On the field, Loic’s quickness is unmatched: His defense frustrates anyone unfortunate enough to draw his matchup, and his fakes send marks to the dirt with a mouthful of mud, as Loic darts past defenders and into the endzone. There is no dead space when Loic has the disc – his complete throwing bag and inexplicable release points are unstoppable. What’s more, Loic never stops sprinting around the field – often in circles – working harder than his defender to make offense easy for his teammates. Loic is genuinely unguardable
Off the field, Loic has gained a special respect from his teammates. When he speaks, there’s an unquestioned trust. At the same time, Loic has a selflessness and humility that is truly rare of star players. Most importantly, however, Loic – through his character and priorities – has been indispensable to Smaug’s special and joyful culture. If culture comes from the top (perhaps, given Loic’s stature, the bottom) then we have been fortunate beyond words to have had Loic there.
UCLA Smaug is eminently proud to nominate Loic “The Shire” Billaut for the 2026 Callahan Award.
