Biography

Unlike most other nominees, James Hill didn’t play competitive ultimate until his sophomore year of college. Just a kid from Collins, Ohio, James was a star on the basketball court before ever picking up the disc. But it’s fair to say he picked it up quickly — that next summer, he was playing in a club national final with Ann Arbor Hybrid. James nearly immediately became a dominant force in the college division. His defensive presence, especially in the deep space, is rivaled by few in the country. Not only is he exceptional in the air, he puts his body on the line, constantly laying out through unders to generate blocks. Pairing this with an arsenal of cheeky throws and impeccable game sense, James is one of the most complete players in the division. Off the field, James leads by example. His unbreakable composure helps keep the team even-keeled, while his infectious on-field playmaking speaks for itself. Hard, smart, and tough, nobody better exemplifies the values of Michigan Ultimate. We are honored to present James Hill for Callahan and believe he is as deserving as any of the award.
