Johnny started playing ultimate at Catholic High School in Baton Rouge. He continued his love for the sport at Louisiana State University (LSU), where he played for five years. While at LSU, Johnny’s unique skill set allowed him to play both offense and defense at a high level, and his creative style of play opened the entire field for him to work with. This season, he was the anchor of LSU’s D-Line, using his defensive ability to create turnovers and his offensive ability to generate breaks.
However, perhaps more important than his hard work and skill on the field was his dedication off of it. In 2020, Johnny took on multiple leadership roles that put LSU in a position to have a successful postseason and successful future following his graduation. He took an active role in creating an atmosphere and team culture that made new players feel welcome and veteran players feel challenged to get better. Additionally, Johnny gave back to the community that provided him an opportunity to play at a high level by taking on the head coaching role at his former high school.
Johnny’s impact extends beyond prior accolades or statistics. It is what he means to his team, individual teammates, coaches and community that makes him an extremely deserving choice for the Callahan Award in 2020.View Nominee Video
